Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Interesting article on IBM’s worth and its future

This is the stake in the heart for current executive management. They started out behind the power curve and can’t escape the legacy that Ginni left them. He-l of a job IBM board He-l of a job

Stagnant Growth

IBM continues to struggle to grow their revenue consistently as it has been in a steady decline over the past decade:

Unfortunately for them, we do not see this changing meaningfully anytime soon as their legacy businesses continue to appear to be in terminal decline and their growth initiatives continue to be encumbered from within by their large bureaucratic structure and culture and outcompeted from without by tech giants like Microsoft (MSFT), Google (GOOG) (GOOGL), Amazon (AMZN), and Oracle (ORCL). Unfortunately for IBM, it is simply unable to attract the same caliber of talent as these peers given their superior reputations and more innovative cultures. While IBM may be racking up patents, few of these innovations prove to be truly groundbreaking and their competitors continue to out-recruit, out-grow, and, ultimately, out-perform them. his is

Pay no mind. On this site anyone can inflate the up and down arrows to whatever they want btw. It's not hard. This site needs to evolve or die it hasn't changed in how long? Talking about obsolete... It's always a nice slice of ignorance from disgruntled folk.

Do any of you even have dots and Alexa? It is horrible. My wife and I hate it and we only keep them all because they're so dang cheap. They never work right, in fact dr sbaitso (look it up) from decades ago did better if you ask me. Funny how angry a couple of kids in the forum get when you so much as say anything remotely different than bickering and whining about IBM. Mazel tov.

Anyone else find the current state of affairs confusing?

Long ago IBM has reps onsite in most major corps.

With that level of access, you would think IBM could know exactly what customers want... and build it.

Why did/does that not happen?

😂 Amazon Alexa can run circles around Watson. What has Watson done? Win jeopardy 20 years ago and no revenue yet. 😂

They are fake paid-for design awards. All those "awards" are.

While the hyperscalers are working hard to conquer the businesses of the world, IBM gloats internally and externally that its products are getting design awards… they just don’t get it!

Amazon ECS Anywhere, Azure Arc, Google Anthos, the hyperscalers are all in on hybrid cloud now. IBM is going to need a lot more than just RH OpenShift and CloudPaks to counter them. Meanwhile IBM leadership delusionally still thinks VMWare is the main competition here.

Bro Amazon has echo, dot Alexa on top of prime, AWS, S3 and many other services.

What does IBM have? Z, DB2, cloud paks??? They are also screwing Redhat dude. IBM is finished 10 years back. Nothing can change it. If you are at IBM, it means you are low skilled and can't find any jobs elsewhere.

FYI, Amazon was never profitable until AWS so yeah, Amazon's success comes from AWS, i.e. its cloud business alone has more business than IBM, sure of course it does. It started in 2006. What do you expect when you have a 10-year headstart. I still think Amazon is the walmart brand of tech. Amazon Basics, Echo, Dots, Alexa? These things are an embarrassment coming from such a wealthy company with so much success. Amazon will slip. You just watch, they all do. IBM did. All IBM (or Oracle, MS, etc.) has to do is hang in there and wait.

Just the cloud portion of Amazon (AWS) businesses is poised to overtake ALL of IBM in both income and profits in a few more months.

IBM was already struggling to grow hybrid cloud WITHOUT competition on that from the largest cloud provider.

Well sorry IBM, at long last, this week Amazon has finally rolled out its hybrid cloud offering:

"ECS Anywhere, which enables on-premises or Edge container applications to be managed by AWS, is now generally available."

Your king is surrounded. Your move, IBM.

The revenue issue at IBM will continue. When AK announced the GTS spin-off the charts showed Kyndryl at 19 billion and Hybrid IBM at 58 billion. IBM after 1st quarter earnings is no where near those revenue numbers for 2021. Right now the street is expecting 73 billion. That means Kyndryl and Hybrid IBM revenue expectations have to shrink I expect Kyndryl to continue down the 4-6 % shrink path, and Hybrid IBM to go down the 1-2% shrink path. That equates to approx 17 billion for Kyndryl and 56 billion for Hybrid IBM. IBM could move Part of Systems (power and storage) over to Kyndryl in that, that piece of the business is shrinking at the 4-6% rate thus eliminating yet another drag on hybrid IBM. If that was to happen expect the TSS portion of those products to move too. Hybrid IBM will most likely keep Mainframe, and it’s TSS support (aren’t monopolies fun) The primary reason for Hybrid IBM to keep mainframe and it’s cyclic revenue stream is systems is exactly the monopoly nature of Mainframe. There is zero competition and IBM can shape it’s future however it wants vs competitors who have to buy from IBM and abide by IBM’s imposed rules for HW, SW, and services. IBM is betting the companies future on this, and it’s ruthlessly pursuing that strategy. NOTE if IBM spins off some of Systems and TSS to Kyndryl, the revenue stream goes to 20 billion Kyndryl and 53 billion Hybrid IBM. Remember the combined dividend of both companies has to support the old IBM dividend. To do that, IBM has to over stuff Kyndryl revenue to support a 3 year dividend business outlook. Kyndryl will still have to aggressively cut into the future to support the dividend burden IBM will place on it and it’s continuing legacy shrink. Hybrid IBM will have to hope it’s higher growth rate having shed GTS and Systems (less mainframe) will support margin expansion from Wall Street, but to get the margin expansion and buy in from Wall Street, Hybrid IBM will have to shed approx another 30k worth of employees. That 300k + of revenue needed per each and every active employee is quite a mill stone that Hybrid IBM has to manage against in a hyper aggressive marketplace.
