Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

District 3 hiring temp service techs

Temp services technicians will take at least a year to half a$$ learn the job and then be laid off. What is the point of this? They will mess up the cr---y copper plant worse than it already is. Why not promote senior wire techs that have been with T for 5-10 years and should be able to learn the job much more quickly?

It doesn't take a year to learn the service tech job if you have a drop of intelligence. If it took you a year then you aren't very smart

I was a Prem Tech for 3 years, left last year for a higher paying job, now the company I work is losing its contracts. Just accepted one of these temporary FT OPT jobs for the fiber project. Looking forward to it.

@1bji.....

  1. Management started getting bonuses for how much $ they could save on no cable repair/replacement
  2. Techs started getting ordered to/rewarded($ for being an A tech) for cutting changes instead of fixing cables.

“They’ve laid off a ton of level 31’s (ST’s and OPT’s) over the past few years, including myself. They aren’t going to be replacing those jobs with permanent ones. They’ve been using temps as replacements for quite a while.”

They’ve also hired tons of permanent 31s, as well as permanent 32s here in D3, all into construction for the new build they keep telling us is coming. Our ratio is running about 1:1 for Temp OPT against Permanent OPT and FT hired recently in our workgroup. We are hearing rumors another half dozen permanent 31 and 32 positions will be filled here this year.

Temps save money from 401K, pension (those still covered), vacation, ...
As a manager, I feared a strike. The only advantage of strike training was to educate me on how hard craft jobs had become. Temps will cause more problems than help. Hopefully, there are enough experienced workers to call to fix the mess created.

I can’t speak for everywhere, but around here the plant was in great shape until two things happened.

1) The company turned new hires with absolutely no experience whatsoever loose in the cable to “condition” pairs for U-verse.

2) The company completely de-emphasized quality and made “compliance” king.

Again, not speaking for everywhere, just the area I work in.

Good news for you. Now you have someone to blame for your subpar work.

Stop being such a drama queen. Nobody is gonna mess anything up. Just complaining for the sake of complaining.

Why isn’t the union making a deal with T to hire techs from within like they have in the West and Southwest! The temps that were hired are now permanent!

Besides would make too much sense to do that.

It’s all about the bottom line and labor agreements. No rules on work hours and duties when hiring contractors. They get paid by the job.
