Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Some people here confuse me

I know people hate their jobs here, I know our management leaves a lot to be desired, but how does wishing bad things on the company and hoping it fails in everything it does help you? As bad as this job is, it's a (relatively decently) paying job. You wishing that XOM fails is like cutting off your nose to spite your face. People wanting to see a change I understand. People wanting to see it all crash and burn, not so much.

Hoping the company crashes and burns so you lose your job is not “the only way out”. You can leave anytime you want. If you can’t find a better job (however you define better), then Exxon is the best you can do no matter how bad you think Exxon is. If Exxon mistreats you, then it is because you allow Exxon to mistreat you. If you cannot get a better job, it’s YOUR fault. Time to take responsibility for yourself.

Because this is what they think when they tell you that your idea in the meeting was brilliant.

If you have to ask then you are either a mo--n or part of the problem or perhaps both. Exxon management will never change on its own. So the only option is for things to crash and burn so that change does occur. Management doesn't run this company, the workers do. The company can survive without the current management but not the workers.

Fake “positivity” does not help. There’s a boat load of it on LinkedIn, if this kind of stuff brings tears to your eyes:
“I’ve just been laid off by EM [with the thinnest possible package or tarred as a low-performer and thrown out through a disguised lay-off those crooks call PIP]. I’m so grateful for all the wonderful things the company gave me. I’ve learned so much working for EM, although training has been cut long ago and in the current downturn it’s impossible to find a job in the field I’ve worked for 15 years, but I’m only thinking about the bright future and how I will follow my heart and fulfill my passions. My only concern is that my network on LinkedIn doesn’t have the right diversity to achieve much desired equity”.

@wpj Sounds like OP is on the side of “workers” to me.

“ People wanting to see a change I understand. People wanting to see it all crash and burn, not so much”.
You’re answering your own question, OP. People have zero hope for change and most have nowhere to go outside the company given the O&G situation.
When your management is ossified to the point that they will never accept change and turn themselves into the dedicated enemy of the regular workers, all what the latter can do is wait for the company to crash to the point it blows the management to pieces. Yes, many regular employees will also loose their jobs, but for most of us that’s the only way out, plus the satisfaction of seeing those entitled, arrogant and blind managers finally facing the reality.
You want “positive” action ? I’m not an engineer and if I could get a job outside the company for even half the normal salary I would get of the Titanic tomorrow. I can tell from your point of view on which side of this divide between workers and parasites you stand.

Because many people are hypocrites in life. People will complain about how a company treated them or how a coworker/manager treated them, but instead of really hoping for change and for things to turn around for the better, they hope everything fails. They fail to realize that there are many hardworking/honest people in this company and that their desires would be truly devastating to those people’s families and futures. Once people feel they are treated poorly, they forget about others around them and just want “justice” on the person/company/institution that they believed caused the pain in their life. People are often selfish and entitled and are fine with bad things happening to other people (usually because of a lack of awareness about all the people their desires might actually be impacting), but cannot handle/accept bad things happening in their own life.
This hypocrisy happens everywhere though. Look at some religious people that preach love and redemption, but then don’t come to the aid of that neighbor that needs help because they don’t believe in their neighbor’s lifestyle or choices. Or look at politicians that condemn the treatment of a certain class of people, but then they drive nice cars, have nice apartments, earn in the top % of income brackets, and don’t come to the aid of their own family members that are living in poverty and are in need.

This company is so large that many people are very far removed from what actually goes into the top section of the Income Statement.

People drink that company koolaid. I remember getting called out for saying this company wasn't good as it seems. Saying if this was a my first job. Now that the company is layoff off workers, they did a 180.

I wonder if this is their first job. Never drink any company koolaid unless you made it yourself
