Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Why are you leaving IBM?

There's been a "Why do you stay at IBM?" thread posted at this site. Here are my primary reasons for leaving:

  • Toxic and controlling culture
  • The steady drumbeat of constant "Resource Actions" (Layoffs)
  • Treating employees as a fungible and disposable commodity
  • Back stabbing co-workers who will smile at you, and then throw you under the bus in a heartbeat if they think they will gain some advantage from it
  • The utter cluelessness of the gravely misinformed and just really, really stupid and arrogant management

What are your reasons for leaving?

  1. Salary

Market is super hot and most companies are paying atleast 50% above ibm pay for same yoe and similar col area

This question has been asked many times to Arvind and Jim but they always say that ibm compensation is fair. Which is a complete lie!

People even debunked the pmr study done by ibm and found that ibm was using random salaries from non-tech, non-consulting firms maybe to find low end of the pay range and then they set midway between low and high which is completely non-sensical.

There's no bonus or stocks either. I am sure that it's completely different for execs.

  1. Processes

Everything at ibm is slower than governments, need anything from management? It'll take so much time, you might lose a client or

  1. Grim Future

Looking further it seems to me that IBM can't actually afford to do any real research and build anything because they do not have $$ for it. They can and will buy small companies who have successful products generating revenues. So no one at ibm will ever be involved in next best thing.

  1. Top down culture

This is very self explanatory, have a disagreement with manager and see what happens. Managers who are completely non-technical and have no idea what their teams are doing but want to dictate them.

Because I stopped drinking Kool-Aid. LOL

They stopped giving free Kool-Aid at our office years ago. Cost cutting.

I guess it is harder to brainwash people over a broken email system.

I got Layed off but as soon as I let a few recruiters know the flood gates opened up. Found a new job in 9 days. Even had to turn other offers down.

Point is that IBM works to keep you ignorant for what you should get paid, the territory you manage and what the competency of your technical resources should be.

There’s a brighter world out there for sure. Just gotta look

More money, better and more interesting job. IBM is totally behind everything... well except in Mainframe... that is where it will end up... Mainframe Only Company (MOC)...
Nothing wrong with that.

It's economics.

I've had to take a part-time job three nights a week to keep up with inflation. This second job helps pay for elder care costs.

I am looking to leave as soon as I possibly can because I need more money.

Better pay at another company. When I told them my base at IBM they literally laughed and were so shocked! I’m getting a 50% base pay bump at my next role

I knew after 1 week here I made a mistake. This company is very poorly run with C grade talent. Throw in the legacy products that are near impossible to sell snd the non stop pressure to meet unrealistic quota targets. This is easily the worst company I’ve ever worked for and I used to work for the government.

Because they don’t pay. When I got an offer from Wipro that beat my IBM salary by 60%, that was a big wake up call. I’m resigning this week for AWS where I will get a 150% pay raise to do the exact same job I do today.

Interesting that you mention Education. Walmart just announced 100% reimbursement for college tuition and books. So, we're working for a company that has far worse benefits than Walmart. Just think about that for a second. No wonder people are leaving in droves.

Let me see.

  1. Corrupt Executive Team. (Members-Only attitude).
  2. Jim W. leaving.
  3. Being blamed for management's screwups.
  4. No education incentives.
  5. Customers laughing at IBM and leaving.
  6. Microsoft, Google, Amazon are better service providers than IBM.
  7. Deloitte laughing at us and winning deals.
  8. IBM living on legacy ideas and technology.
  9. RA, PEP, etc. (The slimy practices managers use).
  10. Focus on $$ and not qualify of services.

That should be enough for this hour.
