Thread regarding Weatherford International Ltd. layoffs

Good old days

I've been here for a few years so all I know is the cr---y company I had the misfortune of joining when I didn't have any other options. There are some old-timers I work with who keep talking about the good old days when getting a job here was a cause for celebration and I can't imagine that ever being true. Was this once a great place to work or do they need to remove their rose-tinted glasses?

Place used to be great before BDD and Precision arrived. Lots of fun and made decent money. Then came all the acquisitions which were piecemeal, way overpriced, and never fit in with the basic business plan of Weatherford. It is a shame…..not too many good folks left except Corvette boy. (Just kidding)

It was good at one point. I actually enjoyed the job and put in a proper days work, now, no feeling at all. Just as long as the money goes in every month, doing as little as possible without getting caught. Just wiggle that mouse every now and again…

Is the weeble still wobbling at BOD?

I worked at Weatherford for over 20 years, finally had enough and moved on in 2018. When I first started I enjoyed working there. It was a growing company with a lot of potential. Sure there were issues, but management had a smaller footprint and seemed to actually be trying to improve and was effective.

Things started changing with the purchase of Precision Drilling. Weatherford never did a great job of integrating the companies that it acquired, but prior to Precision the old way of operating like several small companies under one banner was still more or less working. After, it was just too big to carry on that way.

That led to re-organizations and more and more layers of added management. Ineffective managers were never shown the door, just shuffled on to another role at the next re-org. Lots of people hiring their buddies from other service companies, good-ol-boys, nepotism and so forth. Then came the accounting issues with restated earnings and that set them on a path from which they have never recovered.

Throughout all of that the general mood changed. It went from a place where you felt you could have a career and advance to just another job. Then it went from just another job to wondering if you were on the next RIF list.

Was with this company 20 years until I got a deal to retire a year early a year ago. Yes there was up’s and downs, like any other company. I worked hard to get too where I was when I retired. This company put food and a roof over our head. I will never say anything bad about it. Yes there were people in places in my opinion should not have been there. But I never hired them. My teams in different places and countries new the score, do your job and you will have nothing to worry about I will have your back. I have had toe to toe debates with a lot of people in these years. If you are good at your job others will listen. Cannot stand people that say they are not happy with the company, if not pack your bag and move on.
