Thread regarding IBM layoffs

What's left of the once great IBM brand?

IBM has treated people like a disposable commodity for so long that management just can’t break away from that mindset. Senior management still arrogantly believes that the IBM brand has an unlimited amount of goodwill, and can always be used to attract new people to replace anyone who leaves. Having worked with some of the new folks, though, I can tell you that most of them aren't even close to the caliber of the people who have departed out of disgust with what IBM has become. I've also seen that the small number of new folks who ARE good quickly realize there's nothing but a raging dumpster fire behind that shiny IBM logo fa├žade, that joining IBM was a BIG mistake, and they jump ship as soon as they can.

Very nicely said, @izm+1cnChB8j. Precisely that, those at the top rely on a brand that is no longer as shiny as it used to be.

You are an id--t... yes, Kubernetes (the software) is free!
But unfortunately, it is so difficult to deploy and operate then yes you need talents.
These days the computing landscape has become so ridiculously complex then of course it requires some serious skills to make it work...

Kubernetes is not free it requires lots of expensive talent that is hard to find. There's a massive shortage iin microservice architecture skills so it's sometimes cheaper and easier to just upgrade from vanilla.

The people running IBM brand are even a joke now. TY’s team has gone to sh1t and they do nothing other than excerpt their arrogance.

I think IBM (as well as many others) is banking on the short-term corporate memory to engage them again and again: where the C-suite is changing on a 12-18 months basis, you can always get back to a burned account once new people forget you're incompetent or you can slip a pro-IBM c-level executive from one of the corrupt consultancies. In my view, this has worked well but i wonder if it will work once you have gone through the whole ecosystem and burned everything.

Mainframes... the brand is great there.

OpenShift is not even an IBM brand... it is a RedHat brand, but that is OK because
most customers don't want to touch OpenShift. Why would they? When Kubernetes is free!
