Why stay?

Quite a few people could comfortably retire but they're still working. Why?

Many who are retirement age and still "working" at Intel have spent basically their whole careers at Intel. It's their lives and social circles. All they know how to do is be an Intel employee. If they're part of the political networks that have allowed their useless @sses to survive for this long, they can pretty much stay as long as they want and keep collecting a salary, stock options and all the rest. They just need to go through the motions and playing the game. Meanwhile Intel fails...

With the calculus, be careful calculating the volumes of solids of revolution with disks, washers, and cylindrical shells. Some of those can be real doozies.

I'm a retiree from Intel; left with $1.5 million+ that we have spent almost none of in the 7 years I've been gone. My former chiropractor used to obsess about retirement back in the 90's, and back then I never figured it would be so easy and cost so little. As for what to do with my time; I taught myself piano, studying calculus, sciences, gardening, travel (before pandemic), and just enjoying life and the birds at the feeder. :)

Intel is a great place to get paid for retirement life
why bother to do nothing at home but do something at Intel with wonderful perks?

Define “comfortably retire”.
Some possibilities: no mortgage or other debts, all kids graduated from colleges, can cover most medical bills because you and family are healthy enough, or your spouse continues working while you can enjoy your retirement, etc.

Some is for medical. If you could retire but had that chance to stay and not do anything. Just ride it out till you had enough. Obviously you found your edge over other people or are a brown nosed.

OP: are those people working comfortably? If so, why not stay?

I left on my own in Q2 after ~15 years, part of the Great Resignation wave.

If I had a chance to leave Intel, I'd run, not walk.
