Thread regarding Thomson Reuters layoffs

Career at TR

How satisfied are you with the growth of your career here?

Unfortunately, I only now realize that I have wasted my time here.

the only (and very, very limited) career options are lateral and apparently there is no pay increase for any lateral move!!!! that is crazy.

I had a great career in TR, actually...and this is coming from one of the biggest Refinitive detractors on this board. I was able to change roles every 2-3 years on average, and make enough connections in Corporate to keep mobility.

When the Reuters people came in and took over TF, I lost a lot of career equity. Though I stayed around for a while because I was grateful for the opportunities that I'd been given, it slowly dawned on me that I'd been put in a different lane by new management. At that point, it was just a job.

I would feel badly if that new management had done great things, but really, all they did was wind down about $2B in annual revenue (most of it organically though there were some sales e.g. the old Carson business, some Lipper assets), slash costs to keep margins healthy, and sell the husk in a LBO to Blackstone. So I don't feel too bad for not having got the approval of that cabal.

I should have left a couple years before I did, but all in all, I am happy with the first part of my career at Thomson.

There is no career at TR. It's just a regular pay check, until they decide your time is up.

A career presumes both regular promotions and growth in a person's chosen vocation. To enable this usually takes time. I've always considered if you sign up for work at TR then it is a job and not a career because of all the constant layoffs and restructures.

Also, there are just not the roles to apply for to progress, ie a flat career path, especially when it comes to managerial roles which appear to be taken by "lifers', many of whom perform at a sub-optimal and non-challenged level.

Best to regard working for TR as a job, and a short-term one at that.

Been in the same role almost a decade. I’ve looked for other positions that I could move into but nothing ever seemed like an option. I’ve applied for one a few years back but it required me to be in one of the hubs, which I was not near and didn’t want to move.

There is no growth for me or my team hear. No formal path. The only option we have is to somehow magically create our own new role here. It’s an option. A long shot but an option.

The other option is to move on to greener pastures. Which is much easier to do.

To better answer your question there has been zero growth and the idea about all of this career planning is really a smoke and mirrors game. There are no roles for a lot of folks here to grow into.

Additionally the idea that you have to be at a hub to get considered for these roles is a stupid joke as well. Clearly working nearly 2 years remote for the whole org has shown it doesn’t matter where you are.

To those wanting more. You need to figure out where you want to be in your career without trying to fit TR in the picture. If it fits fine. If it doesn’t then fine. Have a clear goal and break down the steps to get there.

I am working on one now and and getting close to achieving it. I know you all can too.
