Do you really think that all employees from closing stores will be given an opportunity to relocate or completely change their jobs within CVS? They're saying that only because the scope of the closings is so large that they have to temper the bad publicity somehow. I'm betting you that come spring, those offers will be extended just to a select few.

We’ll it is a good time to get rid of id--ts that you normally would have to keep when these stores close
I really do think most employees will be given a chance to transfer because almost every store is understaffed right now. I'm sure there won't be room for some, but it's not going to be a select few like you think.
CVS/Aetna have always laid off employees. CVS throws employees away like trash. They have a very bad reputation in communities I know. Most people I know will only see their doctors at the office not a CVS location that is very cold. Especially when they are known for high prices and very bad to their employees. Every review I read about them is CVS doesn't offer enough good training then people quit. Come on Karen Lynch get real with the people who actually see these customers. Word gets around really fast when you don't instill trust. Will not work.
It looks like they are doing layoffs which probably means you will get the least they are obligated to give. The severance packages will go to the employees(executives) that really do not need it as they are making in 1 month what the regular employee makes is a year. Sadly it is about making sure the executives are substantially compensated for their work and the executives will move onto another company and get a sign on bonus and a whole bunch of incentives. The employees that deal with the customers will get the extremely short end of the stick but it is the employees that deal with the customers that make the company.
If they're offering severance, I volunteer as tribute
