This outcome was a mathematical certainty on the day Sprint bought Clearwire. AT$T never had a chance. Not to be an apologist for all the very bad management decisions since, but allowing T-Mobile to buy Sprint after disallowing AT&T from buying shows how government can tilt competition. (So called net neutrality, or subsidized use for the FAANG companies, don’t help either.). The fact is, if AT&T was allowed to invest in mobility the way T-Mobile was, and didn’t have its margins in broadband attacked by the government, perhaps it would have been dissuaded from its misadventures elsewhere.

AT&T never had a chance?? I’m pretty sure we’re doing just fine. You see how long it took a failing company like Sears to actually fall? We’re better managed, more modern, and larger than they were. We’re not going to fail. You’re just upset you don’t fit in as well as you once believed you did.
