Don't bother and try to work hard. What you need to do is praise your manager every day, make sure to tell him that his every idea is fantastic, gossip about the rest of your coworkers (but make sure to skip his favorites!), and other brownnosing stuff like that. Then just sit back and watch your career advance.

My supervisor was a constant kisser of the posterior. She had never managed a team before and it showed very quickly. She fit in perfectly with L3 management because she knew how to nod her head.
Human Resources was the worst offended when it came to gossip. One person especially would do nothing but walk around all day and just run her mouth. The other one, the HR Manager, was the ultimate kiss up. Watching her follow two steps behind the VP was hilarious. She was like a puppy for him.
My supervisor and Director were nothing exceptional, but they both acted like they knew so much. Until they didn't. I asked my Director (who has been at the company for three decades) a simple question about our computer system and she just had a blank stare on her face. It was obvious she's never done a day's work at L3H. I called her and my supervisor "D-mb and D-mber" and that fit like a glove for them both.
I wasn't willing to do this. I won't lower my standards. I make people raise them to mine.
Which is why I left.
