Thread regarding Bank of America layoffs

Best jobs are in the public sector

The system is rigged, in the long run you get scalped. Best jobs are in the public sector, they get the best perks, are unionized, have pension plans, excellent health benefits, get periodic raises and hardly susceptible to any layoffs. The term public servant is such a misnomer, I'm surprised we still use it. I won't advise anybody to work in banking or financial sector.

I don't see ANY of the gov. employees coming on this site complaining about massive layoffs, constant fear and institutionalized inequalities. You might get a slow start, but in the long run you are set, with a real career path and opportunities to grow.

Public sector jobs typically pay less, raises may come around each year, but don't count on it. Keep in mind that any government job is drastically affected due to annual budgets. Remember "Do more with less" that we heard for years, government jobs are typically "Do more with nothing"

If you look around you, in your group and on the floor, see how many people in their 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's are there. What is the average age? The median? I bet not too many in the 50's and hardly anybody in their 60's, unless they are management or posses unique skills. That should tell you how much time you have left, based on the demographics of that area. Prepare accordingly because that is the best case scenario.

I highly agree, uncle Sam is the best and safest bet in the long run, it might be boring but it's safe. Check your city and state job openings in finance, accounting, IT and engineering. It doesn't hurt to hedge your bets, stay ahead of any adverse surprises BoA will dish out.
Check this site out for federales jobs.
