In one of the threads here someone hit the nail on the head by saying that most people refuse to take time off. This is what it looked like the last time I did that:
I could hardly wait to take time off - - I finally took time off - - I kept thinking about how much work I would have when I came back - - when I came back I was overwhelmed with work and regretted taking time off.
Anyone else?

A good managwr is last to leave for the day, not the first. If this isn't already happening then that manager isn't hanging around anyway.
Take the time off and let the manager stay late with you once you return to work
Take the time off

I used to save my vacation to take 4 day weekends in the summer because I love boating. Turns out I had to do my 5 days of work in 3 days then spent my first vacation day recovering and the last day of vacation dreading going back.
I have a huge workload whether I take time off or not. I know my team is understaffed now (even though we've been "assured" by our team leader and her leader that we are not) so why should I feel a personal responsibility for a backlog of work? Hey, all the feel-good pep-talk emails we constantly receive encourage us to use the off-time we have coming to us...and I do!
@OP+1dgmJvfc, that's a recipe for burnout. You did the right thing in taking time off. It's that sh-t firms fault for cutting corners with the layoffs and adding extra work to those who made the cut.
