Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Standard of Work

The company will have you believe that "Standard of Work" is to prevent injuries and its good to have a way for everyone to know how to do something. This use to be call an apprenticeship. The only reason the company wants a detailed description of how to do your job is so they can have a Manager or a Scab (samething) step in at any moment when you're furloughed or by some miracle strike. Don't let them fool you.

I could write a manual that a 2nd grader could read and understand and my manager still couldn’t do my job. It’s not the work it’s everything else. Snow, rain, night, day and in the heat. The 15000 steps a day is enough to destroy even a healthy persons legs.

Sure...it has been around awhile and is use by many organizations, but not everyone uses it for its intended purpose. If you trust Union Pacific to not use Standard Work practices against you, you're delusional. What do you think John Deere is doing right now? Their workers are on strike and they have office personnel following the Standard Work and scabbing out their jobs. I've seen first hand, Union Pacific using their Non-Union Management to fill Union jobs when they were furloughed not too long ago.

This is ridiculous. Many organizations, including the military use standard work principles. Doing routine tasks in a standard manner eliminates variability and assists in training. Great conspiracy theory, but not correct.
