It would have been a promotion, but since I'm not in hub city I can't even apply. Incredibly frustrating. I suppose those "opportunities for growth" are for only the geographically desirable.

You could move and then be laid off. I've seen it happen to so many people during my career.
Lots of people have to make this choice. It stinks.
And eventually you’ll have to choose between your job and your home. Sucks.

It's sad that you assume I'm being insincere, but I was told that my LOB would not allow me to because I'm not in a hub. Technically, I might be able to apply, but my application would be rejected.
The company is too much in flux right now. Probably not much you can do except try to communicate this to your boss and/or HR and just see what more information you can get. Assuming they can even give any.
OP, I feel your pain. I'm in a very similar situation. It is very unfortunate and short-sighted but the company will do what they will.

It's the sad reality. Hub locations are the future here, and the location strategy is still in full swing even if RTO is on hold.
