Dealing With Long Hours and Burn-out

How do you deal with long hours? My current day runs about 8 am to 7/7:30-ish pm and I eat and then watch some tv and go to bed.

My weekends consist of chores and resting because I’m so burnt out and behind.

Are there people who make this way of life sustainable?

Sympathize with this post. So much personal sacrifice to make executives happy, but they are never satisfied. They want more, more, more… faster, bigger, better. Pandemic? The heightened pace has been deemed the “new normal.” If you value your health, family, sanity, or just want more quality of life, find a new opportunity. The expectations will never equate to any reward worth the sacrifice.

I've done it. I no longer do it. For years I had my regular job and my "Saturday" job because there was no time in the work week to do it. And that Saturday job was due to my manager telling me how impressive it would be to Sr Mgmt that I was stepping up to do work that was outside of my role. I'll hand it to her. She got me to do it and I got noticed and I got promoted and all that meant was that I was expected to continue to perform in that manner. I ultimately had to leave the team to get some relief...but at least I kept the promotion and I learned a valuable lesson.

"996 work culture" is not here, Americans value their weekends too much.

OP - I hear you. I'm burnt out with weekends no longer, long enough to recoup from the work week. Because of huge workloads vacation continued to be pushed so no relief there either. Long hours on occasion are totally fine, but it seems now expected. I'd like to see BofA change this culture. Curious if 'in China' embraces that work culture. Based on my understanding this has long term impacts to physical and mental health.

Why do you work so many hours? Just do the bare minimum if even that.

In China, they work from 8AM to 9PM, and then take the bus home and do it all over again the next day including Saturdays. Ask yourself, how do they do it?
