Unable to work due to broken disk encryption update

Long story short I have been unable to work the past 2 weeks because they pushed out an update to disk encryption on the 20th of December that broke my laptop. I called the helpdesk and they opened a ticket and assigned it out to some other group. I got a call back on Thursday (3 days later without working - WTF?) from someone who said I had to go into the office to fix it.

I talked to my manager and she said nobody is allowed to go into the office right now, so I called the guy back and he said he'd overnight me a new laptop. I was on PTO last week anyway and was expecting it to show up during my PTO so I could get back to work this week. I am posting on here because the helpdesk said something like, "Oh looks like they got you too" or something, like they were innundated, and it was happening to a lot of people. Anyone else unable to work the past 2 weeks because of this update?

As of this morning my laptop still hasn't arrived, I called the helpdesk again this morning and they said they'd escalate, but in the meantime I'm taking an extra long vacation and I am not using my PTO.

Wells has sadly laid off a lot of experienced and seasoned techs over the last year that would be able to ship a laptop over night in most situations. It seems as if when a lot of them were working at home during covid they felt they could just let them go.

Uhhh… he did request the new laptop. As always with Wells, a simple request is a journey.

I was down for 3 days. Day 2 I was asked to drop my laptop off. Day 3 afternoon, I was told to come pick up a new laptop.

I am frequently astonished at just how much money this company hemorrhages due to sh---y IT policies and practices. Its inexcusable that going on an extended leave of absence guarantees that you will have to get your PC/laptop rebuilt, AND that IT can't recover any files from your machine in the process. Is Mickey Mouse running the damn IT department here?

My boss got nailed with that update. Mine went fine a few months ago.

His went for over 24 hours I think and I have no idea if it completed or not.

Heh, back in the early FDE days the genius we hired away from Pointsec helped me to brick close to 200,000 machines. Pinned it all on me and made it my error to fix even though he never shared the knowledge needed to fix it when he trained us to be admins.

Your manager provided inaccurate information. You can go into the office to swap laptops. I would recommend doing that immediately.

Just request for a new laptop. They can't fix the old one. Happened to many team members.

Tech is backlogged and computer requests are behind. When you can't log in because of computer issues its not your fault and you aren't expected to use pto.
