Promotions are complicated and every big group has it's own politics on this.

If you don’t think you deserve a promotion and ask for it you will never get one. I suppose you could be a victim and sit around meekly waiting for a promotion but good luck with that one. Of course if you believe you are doing an excellent job and exceeding expectations in your year end review you would tend to think a promotion may be warranted. But I suppose only our fearless leaders really deserve what they get ,like the retention bonuses we were all lied to about. Remember there were none? Oh wait then there was about $32M payments to upper mgmt? But they deserved that. Just like our mgmt deserved the bonuses for the Conoco deal as well right? And almost sank Cenovus and got our CEO and CFO fired. But hey who’s really paying attention.

LOL people who think they deserve promotions typically don't. Get that idea out of your head. "Deserve"! LOL.

Career progression? These guys do what ever they can to deny promotions, unless of course it’s for management and their progression. They actively try to deny promotions as they are deemed “not business warranted”. So you might deserve a promotion on the technical side but they will keep exploiting your expertise as it’s not deemed as a business need. When asked who decides if it’s a business need there’s no answer. Unless of course you work in HR then it makes total sense to have the top paid people. I gave up a long time ago on career progression, it’s a joke.
