Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Why do you stay at Cisco?

This is a general question, it's frank. I joined with only two years of experience and I am hoping to get about 5 years of experience and find a better paying job in a better company. I cannot complain much about Cisco though, my team is good and my manager is a true mentor, she rocks....

"So that I can work my way up to be a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Justice Program Manager."

It should be mandated that any employee who has this job title MUST wear a cape and for at last 91.3759% of the time, walk around with their hands in a fist and placed snugly on their hips. Although it is recommended that the color of the cape be cISCO Blue, in order to not offend the remaining color spectrum, cape color choice is up to the individual hero. Those without hands, need not apply.

It’s Kubernetes. You skipped the first lesson.

Massive hours are not the norm if you are assigned to "pet projects" of a Director. It's all about relationships at Cisco. Individual contributors without strategic relationships will be worked long hours and eventually discarded.

Mainly for the paycheck. One can hardly say that the current leadership is inspirational. If I look around in my team (and we are in a pretty good place ) the answer is pretty much the same. Working hours are oki-sh. Not supergood, not super bad.
Should the next lr wave hit, it will be a good step towards retirement.
A bit pathethic perhaps but ..

"The not working much is total BS by ex employees or trolls. Massive hours are the norm now."

Massive hours are the norm only for marks who have been suckered into caring about the company and its performance. The rest of us are on nap time.

The work is steady, I remain professional and do what I have to (and no more) and I get paid reasonable money whilst health insurance and pension contributions into my plan are great. For someone older like me it is a win-win.
I'm offered other jobs but why take them when I can continue at Cisco with the current status quo? If they lay me off in three years, great, even better and I will take early retirement with their layoff. Until then I can also use Cisco resources to continue to learn tech stuff that I may want to continue with in my own small business one day, maybe. Also still useful for now too in my job. Currently learning Kuebernetes, Docker and Python. All very useful skills, even when older.

There are no other jobs in my area. I also don't live in a time zone that makes remote work interesting.

where else can one work 2hrs a week and get paid a full weeks pay? I can spill more beans but I don't wanna ruin the party. a friend of mine used to work from an Irish pub pre-covid. he would get drunk and enjoy the company of some hot babes while being paid.

Yeah, the below poster has it right. The managers don't know much of anything and don't even know what work you do - so you can write any BS on a checkin you want and they just eat it up.

Most folks I know stick around because either they don't have skills to take elsewhere, or they don't want to do any actual work. You can sleep through the day, pretend to be on meetings, and just do what you want with your life.

Sure - the culture sucks, the backstabbing is intense, the work is pointless, and the company isn't going anywhere interesting - but a free paycheck while you do other things is alright.

I get paid a decent amount of money to do very little actual work.

I keep wondering how long I can go until someone in power will figure this out, but this game has gone on for over ten years.

If they only knew how I really feel. If you are good at st-----g egos and making nice Powerpoints for your director, you have come to the right place.

Other than that, I don't really care.
