ExxonMobil aims for net zero greenhouse emissions by 2050

ExxonMobil — which has been under pressure from investors and climate activists to slash its carbon footprint — announced its intent to bring greenhouse gas emissions from its operations to net zero by 2050.

In a report released Tuesday, the oil giant said it has identified more than 150 “potential steps and modifications” to reach its goal over time. It also says it already is working to limit methane releases, upgrade equipment, and eliminate routine venting and flaring.

“We are developing comprehensive road maps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from our operated assets around the world, and where we are not the operator, we are working with our partners to achieve similar emission-reduction results,” chief executive Darren Woods said in a statement.

The zero-emissions goal applies only to emissions given off directly by the company’s buildings and vehicles, such as through the burning of excess fuel, and through emissions released by its direct customers. The net-zero goal does not include so-called “scope 3 emissions,” which include everyday drivers who fill up at the gas station, as well as others who burn its fossil fuel for energy.

Does anyone really believe this? There will be 10 more CEOs before 2050 and that if Exxon survives until 2050.

That's an archetype of greenwashing. A “cas d'école” as we say in my neck of the woods (no pun intended...:) ). As I've seen written in other comments, making commitments on scope 1 and scope 2 emissions, might be worthwhile for, say, a steel or a cement producer, but it's irrelevant to the O&G industry where the key point is scope 3 emissions (that is the emissions induced by the use of the products we manufacture and sell).

You will not get rid of them. In fact you will get to know them even better.

Can we get rid of all the people who transferred to UIS from CSR in the last five years? These folks are atrocious and their work ethics and courage of conviction is pu-e worthy.

typical bad timing from Irving.
save this kind of press release when stock drops back to 60.
announce share buybacks now - the greeny stuff for later.

Like an alcoholic promising to abstain only on Mondays, starting next decade.
The “commitment” is only for Scope 1 and 2, for projects we operate. And it will take ~30 years to net zero emissions from those operations.

Meanwhile, the rest, 80% of current emissions are Scope 3, those from burning gas, fuel, etc. They remain unabated.

And the kicker: the net zero part depends on failing technology, like CCS.

Durwood entering the “beauty contest” is a doozy.

It's pretty easy to make promises for others to carry out. Not only will Darwood not be here in 2050, many of on this site will not be working either.

It's just said to tickle the ears of the Global Warming crowd.
