Definitely…If you were a good performer but above the mid point in your job classification benchmark meant you received less of a raise than those below mid point who may have not performed as well.

"Competitive benchmarking" started about 30 years ago as a way to sc--w over the employees.
The current bunch in charge just screws over the employees at will, without even pretending to justify it.
As tired as I am of the, “why xerox fail?” questions maybe I shouldn’t be. The story of Xerox’s epic failure should be the go to illustration example for every student class, for every subject, every day, from kindergarten to college. Maybe then Americans would have it drilled into their skulls that a company that continuously fails to innovate can not be sustainable. That said if you’ve worked at X for over 2 years and STILL have trouble figuring out “wha happened!”

They use the benchmarking line of BS as corporate eyewash when hacking empl benefits.
Benchmarking can be very useful in general product, benefit and services improvement, but x seems to focus on cost cutting alone and not using it on making things better and possibly also cost effective.
Awful managers who bought into Lean Six Sigma. They also pushed Agile methodologies for product development (It's not suitable for that, as they learned). Outsourcing to India while kicking out solid developers. You get what you pay for you Dummies! It really shows in their product line-up too. Anyone good long since bailed but (old) skills are non-transferable which is why you see a lot of dead-weight who will have to cut back on their retirement due to no 401k match.
I think ‘benchmarking’ means how bad a service will a customer accept before we loose business, or how low can they pay before people leave.
