Recall of the Week: Mustang Mach-E Sales Stop Order

We went almost two weeks w/o a recall and thought we turned a corner.

Let you be the judge of the severity and impact of another safety issue recall to our customers that might expect seat belt performance where their kids sit or are anchored.

Ford Motor Company is recalling select 2021-2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E models due to a safety issue with the rear seat belts. Additionally, a stop-sale has been issued for units already on dealer lots. The 2022 Ford Maverick is being recalled for the same problem, as Ford Authority reported earlier today.

The defect: in affected vehicles, the rear floor assemblies were produced with tapping plates that may have oversized extruded bolt holes used to attach the rear seat belt buckles.

The hazards: oversized extruded bolt holes may decrease the strength of the fastener jo--t causing inadequate attachment of the rear seat belts during loading, which could cause it to detach and may not adequately restrain an occupant in a crash, increasing the risk of an injury.

Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this issue.

Components: rear floor assembly tapping plates.

Affected vehicles: select 2021-2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E models produced between October 5th, 2020 through November 18th, 2021, at the Ford Cuautitlan Assembly Plant.

The fix: dealers will replace the defective parts, free of charge.

Owners should: wait for communications from Ford, which will begin on January 3rd, 2022. The Ford reference number for this recall is 21C36.

Shows Mach-E actually has a pretty low volume. We used to cancel vehicles that sold that few.

From the Detroit Free Press today:

More than 1,000 customers who thought they'd get a new all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E this year and qualify for a $7,500 tax rebate may be in for an unpleasant surprise.

Ford Motor Co. alerted its dealers to needed seatbelt repair involving certain 2021-22 model year Mach-E SUVs, triggering a hold on any undelivered new vehicles built from Oct. 5 to Nov. 18, according to a letter obtained by the Free Press.

Ford spokesperson Said Deep confirmed Monday that 2,304 Mach-E vehicles are affected by the recall. Of that number, 741 are in customer hands and 1,563 are on hold by dealers, he said.

"We can understand customer disappointment if they may have been counting on applying the credit" on their calendar year 2021 taxes, Deep told the Free Press. "However, delivering vehicles with quality continues to be a top priority."

Customers can still apply for the federal tax credit, it just may shift to calendar year 2022 for some buyers, Deep said.

The credit is applied to the year a vehicle is delivered, not ordered.
