Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

I envy people who're overworked

At least you can be reasonably certain you're safe. I've been having trouble finding things to do lately even when I ask for it directly, which is making me think that my days here are numbered. And while this is not the best place to work, it is better than most, so I'm not too happy that I might have to leave soon.

There is always uber jobs. They can be good backup jobs. No boss and when it’s impossible to get through rounds of technical interviews.

Intel is another mastodon which is tanking slowly but surely. Pat is not going to fix the pervasive malaise and the feeling of impending Doom is everywhere. After few years we might say R.I.P. Intel!

Maybe the group does not have enough work for everyone. Either way, why cannot people be straightforward with respect, like I do not have the work for you in the future due to blah, blah, but I will support you to find a better fit somewhere? The methods used to manage people out is hideous. Why play games?

VSPs are too costly and Intel has found easier ways to increase attrition.

it is not about how good you are, it is about how valuable you are to your manager. To the managers "you are right and technically great, so what, I need someone that I can use in my way (maybe just to bu-----t)".

Yes you’re being “managed out”. Another tactic is to trivialize and minimize your work/contribution. My FLM did that to me before I left on my own. He’d say things like “ your job can be done by interns and technicians” so the messaging is pretty clear.

If you are consistently getting sidelined, take a hint and start looking elsewhere. Best you could hope for would be a VSP, but I don't think they'll be offering them again.

That is an age old tactic at Intel:

Identify targets
Isolate the targets by minimizing their role and reducing their key responsibilities
“IR” them because they aren’t performing important work

Push the system to reset things back to normal while simultaneously look elsewhere.
