Competition is tough in lubricants especially when Amazon is selling their own brand of Mobil 1 for a significant discount compared to the equivalent Mobil 1 viscosity grade.

We are indeed a commodity business including lubricants. Wait until the EV's penetrate the market and less lubricants are needed for cars and trucks.

Cat and Volvo , passenger car oil ,can run at Infineum ,can’t wait to see lights on again in #2 , and there is a bathroom and showers there too not like the mess they built in Clinton. Linwood for happy hour! you will see major outsourcing begin 2022-23 at Annandale, first bet is blending. Mobil one is getting very expensive, 0w-20 $30.00 at Walmart, Valvoline full synthetic, 0w20 at least $5.00 less, I believe we have lost some factory fill also. Put your seat belts on Annandale! Management lies.

All of the passenger car, light diesel, heavy duty diesel and marine engine oil product development could be handed over to Infineum. To be honest, most of the lubricants R&D has already been contracted out to additive suppliers, supposedly allowing EM technologists to work on the high technology, super-duper stuff.

Unfortunately, fewer and fewer customers are buying the super-duper stuff (several industrial lube products have failed to take off), because the regular, “me too” competitive grades are already good enough.

As we see vehicle manufacturers move away from internal combustion engines to electric motors, engine development will stop - meaning that the end of engine oil development is approaching. No need even for the Mobil 1 team anymore. Marine is mostly formulated by Infineum and Oronite now. Industrial is mostly Afton and Lubrizol.

The corporation could easily ki-l all projects not related to Base Stock production (good business), algae and carbon capture (PR purposes). Goodbye Annandale and most of its people. A lucky few might go to Infineum. A few more - not so lucky - might go to Houston or Baton Rouge. The rest …. good luck on the job market !
