CNBC: Google may replace IBM in the Dow Jones Industrial Average

Wow, this doesn't bode well!

https://www.cnbc.com/2022/02/01/alphabet-stock-split-paves-way-for-addition-to-dow.html

"IBM’s closing price on Tuesday was $135.53. With IBM’s recent spin-off of its managed infrastructure business, Kyndryl, and its data and analytics business for health care companies, Watson Health, Big Blue is shrinking. And even before the spinoffs, IBM was plagued by growth issues for years.

Could IBM be a candidate to be removed from the Dow? Maybe. If so, would the index committee look at a stock with higher growth potential like Alphabet.

The stock split perhaps allows for that discussion to take place. For years, Alphabet’s high price made it impossible for the stock to be eligible in the price-weighted Dow Industrials. After the stock split though, Alphabet theoretically could be swapped out for IBM without little impact to the index since both are around the same stock price."

And NOW Amazon too!

"Amazon split could set it up for being included in the Dow Industrials"

https://www.cnbc.com/2022/03/09/amazon-split-could-set-it-up-for-being-included-in-the-dow-industrials.html

"Other techs that could remain vulnerable include Cisco, the fourth-least-influential stock in the index, and IBM, which has the eighth-smallest weighting and has now completed the spin-off of its Kyndryl-managed infrastructure unit."

Does anyone wanna bet me whether or not IBM will be in the DOW a year from now? Anyone? I bet "No way."

At least with penny stocks you lose your money slower than online gambling.

Keep your eye on that “ not a cloud company” If IBM outsources their cloud hosting to say google or Amazon, there is no reason to have “infrastructure” division. AK would be betting the farm on being an enterprise consulting and modernization company. IBM could farm the IP to whoever buys the “infrastructure” part and partner with them via finders fees for the hosting part

IBM clearly stated that it is not a Cloud company anymore... It is a Software and Consulting company... we ain't competing with AWS, MS and Google anymore...

Most IBM "Cloud revenue" is GBS building applications on AWS/Azure for clients. Not IBM Cloud.

IBM Cloud grew at, what was it ... 7% ???

and that is after all the financial engineering and cramming everything to be reported as cloud.

So Amazon posted their earnings after bell tonight, and ....

"AWS revenue increased by 40% to $17.8 billion during the fourth quarter of 2021, the company reported Thursday. After years of predictions that Microsoft and Google were poised to overtake AWS in the coming years given their faster pace, that’s only slightly less than the 46% fourth-quarter growth posted by Microsoft Azure and the 44% growth recorded by Google Cloud on much smaller numbers."

... Um, AWS cloud revenue grew 40%, MS Azure grew 46%, and Google Cloud grew 44% ... and IBM Cloud grew at, what was it ... 7% ???

AK, we have a problem

Getting kicked out of the Dow is usually seen as a signal a company is on the decline, but more importantly any Dow30 index fund would sell their IBM stock as it exits. So expect a volume pop and (probable) drop in stock price if IBM gets kicked out.

It's a sure sign that IBM has officially been relegated to "has-been" status. From THE Dow "bellweather," to a castoff. Way to go AK & GR. Heck of a job!
