Thread regarding IBM layoffs

IBM Expert Labs

Folks in Expert Labs, how busy are you staying? I have an offer from Expert Labs in the US, but I hear so many bad things. Can folks from Expert Labs comment on what the state of the business is, what the career growth potential is, what about bonuses?

Thanks in advance.

Anything IBM cloud- I was with a team that worked with a "cloud migration" architect team of longer-time IBM'ers- including multiple folks that had the "IBM certified smart people" honors (whatever those were, I forget now).

Each quarter my team would ramp the "cloud" team up on what we were doing, at the end of the quarter all the cloud people would be laid off. Lather, rinse, repeat, for over 2 years.

Only you can decide what you want to do.

I work with 10 mainframe clients on a regular basis and none of them want to touch OpenShift. But they are sure interested in Kubernetes.

IBM doesn’t have to convince the world to move to openshift, BUT only their legacy mainframe customers. Yes it’s a heavy lift, but IBM is gaining approx 1000 customers per quarter. If they are the right customers then their go forward strategy is working. (exploit the mainframe) IBM has to trim some of its legacy (non-mainframe) yet so the results are still out

because they only run on top of OpenShift.

Yes, this is also what I have heard from team members that are closer to customers.

OpenShift is not gaining traction as opposed to vanilla K8S, or Rancher or Tanzu.

Someone should tell this to AK who made a 34B bet on RedHat in his ama.

What does Expert Labs do? This is the first I've heard of that org. Was it renamed?

If you have scrolled around this forum and still have to ask this question you are the exact type of person we want !

I agree with your 'Church of Cloud Paks' comment. Unfortunately, for Expert Labs and IBM that strategy is failing miserably. Most customers don't want to use Cloud Paks because they only run on top of OpenShift.

Expert Labs is now the 'Church of Cloud Paks' - basically all of the old IBM Software has been containerized and bundled into 'Cloud Paks' and Expert Labs main focus is on selling/installing/integrating Cloud Paks into customer environments. Not sure if that helps you - if you thought you were going to write a lot of code you'll be disappointed. If you really wanted to be in tech sales then maybe you'll be ok.

I guess just depends which Expert Labs team you are joining. The Integration team which I am part of is slowly dying, it has been for years. 1Q is always slow, which means you need to outperform in the other 3 quarters to keep your job. Don't expect any bonuses, IBM is no longer paying any bonuses. Don't expect any RSUs either.
