Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

I'm an IT contractor at Wells right now, after working for Silicon Valley, not Amazon or Google but in that space. It's a very different culture and you work your bu-t off but, I found it exhilarating to work fast and participate in producing cool things. I was in emerging technologies and I really miss it. But, I'm in my 60s and I probably only have a few more years where I could work at that pace. I know Wells is a behemoth, making change a beast, but the challenge in doing that is also really interesting to me too. Good luck to those who make the move but to those who stay, don't feel like you're missing out.

I saw those headlines too. Good for Amazon! I admit - I'll be perusing their openings as I've also heard the work environment over there is much better these days. Who wouldn't want to work in a fast-paced, bleeding edge tech environment? As opposed to a process-focused, stuffy mess and old tech?

Bezos is only doing that so they don’t throw rotten eggs at his yacht.

If the rest of the bank had any idea how tech has to operate with both hands and one leg tied behind it's back, they'd be impressed with how anything actually works, on occasion.

@1jnd+1fbuEYH4 I know a few WF tech people who went to Google - added $100k+ to their base to move and WFH.

Don't mistake the broken tech and processes for the people who work in tech. This mess works to the extent it does because of the ingenuity and will of the people keeping it going, believe me.

Follow the cash! WF needs totally new tech teams anyway.

I moved on from WF after over a decade and joined Amazon late last year. Yeah only got $160k base pay but also got over $250k signon and $280k In RSU’s

I’m now told I’ll get a nice bump because they updated salary ranges.

Yes they do hire WF tech and it pays very well and now the work I am doing feels meaningful and has a purpose.

There are probably not 3 techies in the company qualified to work for Amazon and pull anywhere near top pay.

The kind of people who work for WF at this point would not want to work at Amazon.

Wells is for those who want to work 9-5, collect their checks, and have a life outside work. Amazon is for coolaid drinkers who don’t mind devoting their lives to their jobs.

Amazon pays better, and looks better on the resume. Wells employees will probably live longer.

We are absolutely struggling to find good engineers in my group and it took almost a year to backfill one position (and the person we did hire is absolutely unremarkable and actually seems to be quite inept). Wells is doing absolutely nothing to remediate this. We can only hire in certain cities, will not even entertain remote positions anymore, and refuse to pay existing engineers market rate (so chances are if you've been with Wells for more than a few years, you're severely underpaid).

I mean, I get that we have a tech department, and thus by default some of them are the best at WF, but given how awful our technology is, agree with the earlier post, who’s going to hire technologists from us, ever?

Yeah, I'm sure every WF tech employee qualifies for the maximum at Amazon.

Why would anyone want any of the WF tech cast-off? Tech here has sucked for a couple of decades now. I always assumed we got everyone no one else would hire given how FUBAR our tech always seems to be.
