Thread regarding IBM layoffs

grass is much greener outside ibm

Will get straight to the point.

I left ibm a year ago when i found out there were no bonuses/raises for developers.

I doubled my compensation just by leaving and after a year got 20-30% raise, without even going to FANG.

My managers (upto director level) are very technical people unlike ibm and they know what's going on in the team.

I feel much appreciated outside, at ibm they'd give some bluepoints and some few $100 bonuses, no stocks and raises were like 2-3%(in the pandemic year they were 0). On top of that the management is clueless but so arrogant, they think ibm is still top player in the industry.
I've seen management treat everyone like sh-t except those 1-2 people who keep on getting raises and promos.

this is the best job market and also has plenty of remote opportunities too, slow down your work at ibm and prep leave.

Left a few months ago and love my new job. Already got an annual bonus that was 20x higher than all the annual bonuses I got during my 5 years at IBM combined, plus I got stock refreshers. I come back here to see the things IBM is struggling with and all I can do is laugh. The place is run by clueless amateurs. Like everyone else says, the only thing I regret is not leaving earlier!

I left IBM nearly 8 years ago after working there for 23 years. At that time I doubled my salary and have received stock grants every year since. I also receive a 15% bonus on that salary, which has never failed to pay out. I left because IBM was finding new and creative ways to limit benefits, stall payouts, reduce compensation and slow career advancement. I was also aware of IBMs notorious practice of age discrimination.

I mirror what you was said here. I left IBM and what a shame I felt like I wasted many years at this company. Sad

"Raytheon is not a proper tech company." What? Says who, some random dude in a layoff forum? Let's see, what to they make.. tech, missile tech specifically, you know the kind that launches a missile to hit another missile in mid-air lol. Yeah, they're just a clothing company.

@2arf+1fc4gtxP, I came from Oracle last, got a huge raise, and I've had multiple offers from different tech companies over the short years out of college. IBM for whatever reason has beat them all. Sure, let's go spend 60+ hrs a week at some top tier company where they own my soul. Complain all you want (I know IBM, so there's nothing new you can say) I'd prefer to have work life balance over $$. Some people put so much weight on TC you forget there's more to life than just money. I have a wife and kids, I'd much rather have the freedom to spend time with them (almost) whenever I want. But hey, if money's your #1, then go for it. Like I said, if you're not happy, leave.

Experience means nothing at IBM... you may get into IBM at a high salary ($140K), but you may never get a raise, or if you get raises they will be a few K per year at most, with some years seeing no raise at all. So, please chime back here in 5 years from now (if you are still at IBM) so you can update us with your salary.

Raytheon is not a proper tech company, so sure you're getting more but wait for another 3-5 years and you'll see the exact same pattern that i mentioned here. Maybe you're the selected few that i mentioned.

Also, how much RSUs are you getting? My estimate is zero.

Compare ibm to any other tech companies, even legacy companies like cisco, orcl etc. are paying much higher to retain their employees and most are going somewhere with their tech future.

Speak for yourself, IBM offered me 28% more coming from Raytheon job, left later on, came back at way more than I deserve. Not everyone's mileage is the same. But yeah if you're not getting a good salary leave for another!

@OP
Congrats! You are so right that management is arrogant on top of being clueless. The managers that did have a technical background remember just enough to be a PITA as they really don't understand modern technical problems and their solutions.

I left IBM 15+ years ago. Not only is the grass greener. Its taller. The best thing I ever did career wise was to throw my badge at my manager and walk out.
