@2bhu I was in the same shape as you when I was 45 and then 2008 came along
@2bhu - Many of us had already invested 20 years of our lives in working at IBM when Management scrood us out of two-thirds of our pensions and retiree medical that we had been promised when we joined IBM. We had been willing to work for way below average pay, because we were told we would be getting a decent pension and retiree medical on the back-end. I don't think you're really in a position to judge other people until you understand what obligations they may have had to others, and what obstacles they may have faced in their lives. Also, most IBM employees are NOT Band 10 and making as much money as you are. It sounds like you've had some good luck and caught some breaks with your career -- not everyone is so fortunate. It seems like some people who've had good fortune don't fully appreciate the role that's played in their lives ... and they also forget about all the people who helped them along the way.
Honest question to Boomers (please don't take it negatively) - If you have worked for 30+ yrs in a Fortune 50 company, how are you not in a position to retire comfortably by age 60/62? Is it just bad personal financial planning?
(I say this as a 45 yr old (relatively young) Band 10 with 22 yrs of work experience and will be more than financially independent by age 60) , I just don't get it!
Once those executive personae get to 60- past their breeder years followed by 10 years of hot flashes- wow, they sure get cruel.
@fas : "All older employees should immediately look into leaving IBM."
I disagree. Older employees should cling on by their fingernails and to get RAed so they can participate in whatever settlement IBM eventually makes. People who leave of their own free will likely get nothing.
Of course, if they've got a much better offer and are afraid of missing out, they should definitely go.
When the documents with the names of the executives on it comes out , things are going to get very interesting for us who were affected. I know, I trained the “younger” teams and then I was cut after 38 years and just about to hit 60. We all know the impacts to so many great workers with outstanding skills and work habits.
You are damn right. I saw it with my Ed own eyes, hundreds of my friends resourced and all were great employees, they could run circles around the mgt team who were major id--ts!!!
All older employees should immediately look into leaving IBM. Older employees get no respect at all. Feb 17 is coming this week. Let's see if another RA is unleashed.
Wow, I fit 2 of the categories when I was laid off in June 2020! “Dated Maternal Workforce” and “Dinobabies”! I understand diversity, including diversity with age. How you get there is hiring younger workforce by growing, so you don’t t have to lay off older workers. Now IBM is in trouble because you continually laid off great employees with a lot of Knowledge wisdom and work ethic!
