Thread regarding AIG (American Intl Group Inc.) layoffs

Oh how they say they value you..

I was just told I am valued and I have exceeded expectations. I asked if I can get a raise / opportunity for promotion and was told “as of now, we cannot give you one but let’s look to get you that raise / promotion for the upcoming year”. It was at that moment I realized I need to start looking for a new job.

For those that hear something like this and get no reward.. Don’t waste your time, and look for something new. They’re going to tell you that same lame excuse come next year, and in the meanwhile you could’ve found another role that rewarded you. I’m very upset with myself that I worked this hard in hopes of some sort of promotion.

They don't tell me "no" straight away, in my departement they let me fill in the promotion/pay rise request every year so that you have to wait 6 months to know if you'll have it. Actually I had some rises and promotions during the last years, in reality I'm happy with my job and paycheck, I just would like a Company that doesn't change direction every 3 years

My team is awesome and my manager is really great but I’m going to be honest. They will always find a way to make you “feel happy” with giving you a raise / promotion. I’m sorry but that doesn’t help my personal financial life so I’m out :). No one works to hear the lip service.. we work to live our own good lives and in return provide great work for the company!! Get it through your head AIG!! Pay us what we deserve!!

I was laid off in 2014. (Happy day). 8 years and I got 1 raise. I was told since I was the last one hired in the department I would always get the lowest raise. I once asked how I could get a raise or better review and was told I had to rewrite procedures on my own time of course, preform exceptionally, motivate others, go out of my way to perform and basically kiss a-s and I MIGHT, JUST MIGHT get a raise. Being laid off was the best thing ever.

Just remember, there are also “promotions” that don’t come with any real increases in comp, just more responsibility being put on you with the trivial position change (Assistant Regional Manager / Assistant to the Regional Manager etc).

This is why there is now all this talk about opportunities in different departments for employees - because management is happy to shuffle you around to another division to fill a ho-e as long as it doesn’t mean they have to pay you more.

Unless your pay grade / STI changes, it’s not a promotion, it’s being given more work and being taken advantage of. If someone is paying you the lip service, they’re doing it because they want to keep you turning the hamster wheel.

Realize the only way you’re ever going to get a raise is by leaving.

Really? That blows, I’m so sorry about that. I swear i would’ve resigned on the spot if I heard that. Get out of here and go somewhere where you are truly valued.

On the other hand, I’m seeing all these promotions handed to friends left and right and I’m waiting here like an id--t. So I’m right with you.. No loyalty at AIG, so i too will be looking for another opportunity

It's unfortunate to have outperformed and receive no financial reward for it. On the bright side, the reward of coming to the realization that you have to find a job elsewhere, will pay you back the rest of your career.

I would love to be told I was valued even if it didn’t come with more money

I was told those exact same words roughly 2-years ago. Left AIG a year ago, after 7-years of no raises. I was told it was because I made more money than another person on the team that was a grade higher! Not my issue! Gone, and gone! Again I saw the writing and left a year ago:)
