Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

It is better to have skills than connections in management

This is the 100th time that I have become convinced that this place is good only for those who have some connections in upper management. Investing effort is not so much important, talent is irrelevant too.
Doesn't matter, I'll find a new job, but I often think what will happen to all of them when they have to find a new job where they don't have their connections...

No your wrong. I was once told by a Vice President that I worked with for years. It's not what you know, its who you know to get ahead. Thank Your Harry Bo-k

The Dell management strategy in action: only promote your friends so that inevitably everyone in your department in a leadership role is your golf buddy. Then it’s basically impossible to be held accountable for the fact that they have no marketable skills or knowledge of what their team does.

EMC was like that too. God, I do not miss that bunch..

It’s actually quite brilliant. The only cure for this level of organizational poison is an even higher up leader to start kicking these people out, but Dell doesn’t have such integrity as a company.

it's the same everywhere.....go on any company board on this site and you'll see the same. Alot of management is who you know not what you know. I've seen many people rise to the top just because they could golf and nothing is better than being on the big guy's team in the company golf league.

If you have industry standard technical skills you'll do fine

If you are a Dell Manager and find yourself getting a pink slip.

Good luck.

EMC was the same way.. Very political and biased management. That is why I left it and never looked back.. Very happy to work in a very different company where I am valued for my skills, not for my connections or back-rubbing skills.
