Its been 3 years since I left a software engineer job at Bank of America. WLB was great for me and the work was pretty easy. It was super easy to be a top performer and to feel confident till you start interviewing outside and get your ego smashed since you are so so far behind in skillset required for tech companies.
Tech at the Bank was 100 percent cost center. I would hear about hiring freezes, low to no raises and bonus pretty much every year. We kept hiring contractors only for their contracts to be shortened and then replacing them. So many senior consultants were only senior in YOE and not in skillset.
It was super easy to get complacent at BOA since work was easy and environment was chill. I feel like you could definitely have a decent career there but your pay and skillset would be very low. Layoffs and RIF used to hit but were very infrequent so not much to worry about so overall job security in tech was good.
Those who are working as SDE at BOA and have aspirations to get into tech companies I recommend you start doing it asap. The longer you wait, the harder it will become to adapt to tech first companies and your probability of being downleveled goes up. I have seen 5+ VP lead developers at BOA get downleveled to SDE 1 at Amazon.
