Well of course he got paid, he had just developed a policy that keeps on making Exxon more profitable year after year when people get pip-ed. For a one time payment retirement payment, he came with a policy which screws the employees perpetually and Exxon keeps making money forever.

"3 months must be the minimum that the company can give without potential for lawsuits." In the US? That number would be $0.
It's different in the UK and a few other places... but here in the states severance is not a guaranteed thing. A lot of places pay none, or 1 week per year, with a cap at 6 months or 3. Some places pay much more. It's all over really. But it's not a thing they owe you. They generally offer enough to make you tempted to sign the general release to get it.

Yes. If you are Pip’d, you will be assigned a case representative who will email you the paperwork that needs to be signed shoukd you choose PIL. Read it thoroughly. In there and/or in the FAQ’s this question is discussed and the company will not fight any unemployment claim.

I am so old that I remember layoffs in which the employees were given 1 month salary for each year of service.

Lee Raymond made the statement that never again will we pay people to leave when we can just show them the door.

Very ironic because Lee Raymond was given $81 million severance pay.

3 months must be the minimum that the company can give without potential for lawsuits.

Yes. Not passing PIP is for cause termination. Taking a PIL you can also file for unemployment after PIL months of pay are expired. ( 3 mon after typically )

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but I have no idea how else to find out.
