Thread regarding Thomson Reuters layoffs

No, you don't want to be laid off

I know it's now popular to say you can't wait to be laid off, but trust me, you don't want to have that happen to you. I have experienced a layoff before, and even with a decent severance package, it's not something I would ever want to go through again. While there might be an abundance of available jobs currently, there is always stress over not having an income which puts you on a deadline that can easily make you accept something that's far from ideal (how do you think I ended up here?) There is nothing good about being laid off.

@wvq+1gS36UfV 2 wks. severance pay for every year worked.
1st time, 12 months of severance = 24 years of working.

2nd, 14 months = 28 years of working.
24 + 28 = 52, and you retired at 53 y.o. after the 2nd time you were RIFd? So you’ve been working since you were 1 y.o.?

“Everyone is always at risk of being laid off.” This may be true for some workers more than others. We know many of those RIF’D in 2018 involved workers in the lower levels of the company. Was management affected to the same extent?

I disagree.
Having left with 14 months pay and a large lump was tax free , it gave me time off and plenty of time to find employment.
Everyone is always at risk of being laid off.
So ensure you are always prepared in life for the event.

During my career I took redundancy twice and volunteered on both occasions.
1st time I got 12 months money , took 3 months off and found work with ease.
2nd time was with 14 months money and this time decided to retire at 53 :-)

I disagree. Severance from a layoff pays you. Getting fired or quitting does not, and there is still stress from looking for the next job with those two, unless you quit from receiving a better job offer.

Sincerely,
someone who was laid off
