Thread regarding VMware layoffs

If you are on the higher end of the pay range, consider yourself gone

Broadcom will use this opportunity to get rid of everybody who they see as earning too much, which will be most of the employees who are towards the higher end of the pay range. How much you do and how well you do it will not matter, this is strictly about numbers. Broadcom is all about numbers.

There is the flat policy in Broadcom. Sr manager can not report to Sr manager and so on. You should be manager with 2-3 employees….
So first they will flat the structure and remove unnecessary managers, but manager can be converted to engineers, but it can be done at the beginning.
There is a generous conversion. All managers got promotion. manager becomes principal engineer, sr manager becomes sr principal engineer.

Per my experiences, I see many people are principal or higher after acquisition (over 80%). it is hard to even find someone to promote every year because they are too high level already.

In 2021, at VMWare, when SVPs left the organization, they never back filled those positions.. They were getting ready for a sale.. Broadcom will flatten the organization even more..

they are going to squeeze and reduce sales commissions for the sales rep, so they can improve the earnings. RIP

Not true. You will not understand it yet, but it is not your salary that matters, but: your skill, you being needed and a more tricky piece the number of "yous".

Anything with "Senior" in the title will be gone. BRCM has flat organisation structure and it isn't unusual for a Manager to have 50 direct reports.

I wouldn't be so sure. If you're a Sr. Director in say the CIBG or CMBU which is where all the growth lies, and you're in a revenue-generating position with a unique skillset, they're not going to let that go.

how soon will the layoffs start post close? Assuming close is in Nov/Dec I am guessing layoffs will be finalized in January 2023?

If so, based on CA experience,

  • What kind of severance can we expect?
  • is the next RSU vesting accelerated?
  • is there any notice period?

I would be careful with this if you read it and freak out. This person is making a broad stroke with the term "higher end of the pay range". We all don't work in CA, so our pay ranges are vastly different between individual contributors. We also have pay bands that differ between ranks. Also, VMware is NOT symantec, we are a broader company with a particular skillset that is way more into critical applications for customers. They can't axe all experienced people that help keep that afloat. I am willing to bet, your skill and experience, will matter here due to the nature of our products and how their success impacts the IT spectrum. Again, we aren't just a dying tech company like Symantec or CA.

This is a true statement. The higher your income, the bigger the target you are.

If you making more than 300K in base, you are out.

Directors, Sr. Directors will be trimmed to the minimal. Sr. Managers are mostly gone.
