I have watched the brilliant show Severance and it is embarrassing to say that as a long time EM employee, I can relate to it all too well. It’s a dystopian story about a corporation that allows you to sever your work self from your non-work self. When at work, you know nothing about your personal life and when not working, you know nothing of your work life. That way, your pesky personal life doesn’t infringe on your work and corporate productivity increases.
It has all the familiar themes…meaningless processes & procedures, KPIs, insulting “atta boy” perks, demands for blind loyalty, gaslighting, psychological torture, micro managers, corporate puppeteering, government lobbying, etc. Its all there.
I joke that if DW saw this show, he’d think it was a great idea and be the quick to
start the campaign to push it to his employees.
