All they see us as are numbers and they treat us as such. As somebody who's been here for over two decades and who has always given his 110%, I should have some sense of job security at this point. Instead, I'm worried I'm going to receive a low ranking despite not deserving it and find myself being PIPed. If the numbers say I need to be gone, loyalty and hard work get completely ignored.

I remember a guy who was a compassionate conservative. Then he started a bunch of wars around the world, there was no compassion when rockets were flying.
@OP - no, d'uh? Where were you in 2020? Exxon and Mobil (US) both had a reputation of being tough when the situation demanded it (maybe E more than M), but the layoffs-disguised-as-PIP has been going on since 2020.
Welcome to Corporate America. Ain't no guarantees, only senior execs get the real perks. Better to work out your health care needs and have an employment contract with your health care costs covered. At the end of the year you either are asked to stay or leave.
"The system as it exists is designed to allow the promotion of “like-thinking”, non-controversial sycophants who will trumpet the company line as loudly and as enthusiastically as possible"
Bingo. Exxonmobil is a cult based on the BITE model.
Exxon employees lack compassion for their coworkers too
10% inflation and no raise or contract for ILEU, 4 plus years? Technicians leaving every week, is their plan working? EII in bed with PA management, so corrupt…..watch out for the rats! Steve where are you ?
Do not expect much love from a company that is shrinking. At this point, the company does not care about you beyond the bottom line. And yes, you are in charge of your career. To believe otherwise is wishful thinking. You need to find other work if you don’t feel the love. You should probably look outside the oil industry.
OP, are you sure? Because all PR machinery, mgmt., and loyalists are singing left and right on LinkedIn about how people are best assets, how great the culture is, blah, blah, blah, and liking each other's posts. If there wasn't compassion they wouldn't be spending all of their highly paid time promoting their human assets and company culture, right? Am I missing something?
The comment “we are responsible for our own careers” is absolutely incorrect. In a completely non-transparent system where employees aren’t even allowed to express interest in potential vacancies that interest them (most often because they aren’t aware those vacancies exist), how can anyone expect to be responsible for their own development or advancement? The system as it exists is designed to allow the promotion of “like-thinking”, non-controversial sycophants who will trumpet the company line as loudly and as enthusiastically as possible. There was a time when initiative and creativity counted for something on the PDS process. Now it is a one-way ticket to NSI.
BS that this is what we signed up for or this is just business. We signed up for careers of meaningful work with dignity and fair compensation. If our current managers have a different vision, fine…just close the pension plan and pay out more compensation in cash bonuses. Then we can all be transactional. But instead they are trying to use the pension to get away with cheating workers out of wages and opportunities. Highly unethical.
Your employment is a 100% business transaction. You have a skill the company needs and they pay you for that service. That relationship does not change even if you’ve been here for 20+ years. Sucks but that’s the truth.
Your are responsible for your own career. EM is responsible to share holders. If you don’t fit the vision then you’ve got to go. It called capitalism. It’s what most of us got signed up for. It’s part of the deal. Keep sharp, maintain your network and you will figure out how to grow. Take care.
Seen any emails about care recently? Yeah, thought not...
Well spoken, XOM has no compassion and loyalty only matters at the time when upper management needs something done that makes THEM look good. I use the word THEM or THEY because that's what we hear all the time THEY need this or let's get this done for THEM. XOM O&A Chemical Beaumont is tops at this. THEY and THEM no nothing of us Nore do they care. We work tons of overtime here for THEY and THEM and have less time with our families for THEY and THEM. The loyalty is for THEM, and THEY and the NO COMPASSION is for us.
Keep your head down and keep on swinging
Very true, I sympathise with your post. Recently however I've also come to the conclusion that many or most of the employees lack compassion for the employees too... Which is definitely contributed to by the management culture I appreciate. The direction we've all gone in is very sad.
@xyq Because the job market is so great for people in their 50s? Don't make me laugh.
find another job.
