I'd rather leave here voluntarily when I get a better job than have them show me the door. So I wonder if it is even possible to somehow protect your job from layoffs?
Some say hard work can't make anyone's job safer but doing bare minimum can't make it safer either.

Employers who care for their employees do protect their skilled workers.
At McKesson, don't trust the leadership... a bunch of looneys are running it.
Yeah, here in the US, you can be fired for any reason other than one of the few named 'protected' reasons... or for no reason whatsoever.
You could literally be fired for coming in to work wearing a gray shirt on a Monday and have zero recourse. (No legitimate company operates like that, or they wouldn't have anyone wanting to work for them for very long... but yeah, that's about it.)
Depends where you are Us vs EU
If EU you can only be fired, on the spot, for gross negligence. If just performance based you need to get warnings, given a chance to improve etc. Outside of that that can make you redundant by saying the role you are performing is no longer required.
Leave on your own back - if you stay and get the axe you will regret it.
