My father also worked in this industry (not Ford though) and got laid off just before retirement. Now that a lot of people are talking about layoffs here, I wonder if Ford also has this ugly practice of laying off people who are close to retirement?

Yes. They got sued for it and settled out of court for SRD in 2019.
If you are within 5 years of retirement and get laid off, do not sign their waiver until you talk to a lawyer.
It all has to do with the bottom line. Do not believe the "Ford Family" BS
Did you not read the other posts? Everybody at Ford refuses to leave voluntarily because the want to ho out with a severance package.
