The guy was at cisco about 4 years past his prime. Fortunately, he made his billion and lined up his cronies to continue the path to unspeakable wealth. Lesson is to be able to check those preferred employee treatment boxes, be incompetent, drink the politics of the board and you will do well at cisco. Be white, middle aged, and have any tenure at the company in anything less than a DE or sr director and above you will be hosed. It's coming. f you think you are spared you might rethink that.

I can't put amazing and salesman in the same sentence. Amazing surgeon, amazing architect, amazing coder, amazing chef, amazing teacher, sure. A salesman is just someone capable of convincing someone to buy the idea or work of somebody else. Chambers was amazingly clueless.
Chambers did manage to sell Pensando to AMD for $2 billion. Basically a specialty NIC card. They fooled Cisco with ACI and now fooling AMD with this horse-shiit.

John was able to embed Cisco equipment into many large enterprises and governments.
He built relationships which will ensure Cisco doesn't become the next Lucent or Nortel.
He also transformed a boring network equipment company into a prestigious brand. Selling useless CCIE training and other services at HUGE profit margins. John is an amazing salesman with ZERO technical vision or strategy
Chambers is a clown. He poured money into a drone delivery company. Oh and he acquired the Flip Camera. And the Cius tablet. He was convinced video was what going to boost demand for more bandwidth. He also wondered what 3D printing meant for Cisco. It means the same thing canned tuna means to Boeing. Nothing.
No one was better at riding the Internet Wave than John Chambers. Unfortunately, once everyone was connected to the Internet, he was proven to be a one-trick pony that had no idea how to create new areas of growth for Cisco.
He tried to reuse the same playbook over and over and over again to no avail. The Board should've removed him years before he finally left. Unfortunately, the Board hired a Chambers' clone in Chuck so Cisco still hasn't created any new areas of growth.
