Thread regarding Allstate Corp. layoffs

You have to take control of your career

I know, that's easy to say, but I really think that people need to take more control of their own career. There are still many excellent people here who mostly stagnate because it is generally very difficult to grow at Allstate. I think if we did a poll, we'd be shocked by the percentage of people who think they've stayed here too long and now regret it?

Exactly my point from prior posts. Many (not all) claim reps have completely checked out. Rudeness to customers and lack of response is ruining our once great company

I left the company as a mid level leader. There did not seem to be any easy way out of claims once you reached that mid level. It was amazing how many people were just sitting in the same pay band for the past 20 years doing the same exact jobs. There was a lot of stagnancy and complacency. It didn’t seem anyone was really that hard of a worker or cared that much. Very odd. Had to move to another carrier to continue an upward trajectory.

Yea I’m sure that post is from a former Director. If in fact they were, I’m glad he is no longer with Allstate. We don’t need that kind of thinking at that level in the company.

Allstate is left with a lot of Tom Smykowskis. His character in Office Space is deadly accurate of a lot of dopes still left at Allstate. "Well--well look. I already told you: I deal with the god damn customers so the engineers don't have to. I have people skills; I am good at dealing with people. Can't you understand that? What the he-l is wrong with you people?"

As a former Director at Allstate who had a 4 year tenure at the company as part of a 25 year working career to date, I can tell you that the perception of Allstate employees among other companies in the greater Chicago market is not good. Allstaters have a reputation, on the whole, for being marginally skilled, negative attitude under performers. And if you have been at Allstate for any amount of time without a track record of advancement / promotion, then that's difficult to overcome when positing for jobs with other companies. I hate to say it, but the stereotype of Allstaters is real. So the question becomes, acknowledge this and do everything in your power to defeat that stereotype when you interview.

If you cant move up, move laterally if it gets you out of claims. I went down a band to get out of claims and now im back up. There is life outside of claims.

There is no real path out of claims. I’m pretty sure other areas are similar. There isn’t any push from inside to move people along so you truly have to be the CEO of your career. Applying internally appears to be fruitless. Check out companies that may have home offices or regional offices in your area.
