HR is NOT there to protect or help the employees
HR (and Law) exist solely to protect the corporation

Yes of course you can challenge it, XOM system is so corrupt! Find your boss' boss and start sucking up and grovel. Personally know 3 people who had ranking changed after they sucked up and complained upwards. Get out while you still can.

Haha! As if disputing is going to change your ranking. Does disputing your forced move to a job without any skills get you any resolution? We disputing rank is no different. It will only hurt you, the employee, not your boss, mgmt., or HR. Sad but true.

People should start recording these conversations and start exposing XOMs shady business practices in public.

This company has "Courage of Conviction" only on paper. The leaders everywhere in the company and all HR is all spinless. Has not desire not courage to stand up against wrong.

There is no such thing as “Open Door” policy at EM. HR will go after you and get rid of you for filing a formal complaint about the ranking system.

HR threatened me to get me to withdraw my valid complaint.

HR fired the person that attended the ranking meeting that told me the truth about what was said in the ranking meeting that lead to my undeserved drop in ranking.

No recourse. I went to HR years ago - don’t do it unless you want to be black listed.

Seriously, don’t care about ranking. It is a flawed system. Assessments at other companies are flawed as well. Just turn off your brain, turn off your emotions, go through the feedback session, and then get on with your life. Do the best work you can do.

Been at all levels over the years. It is arbitrary and really doesn’t matter that much. None of us are going to be CEO and most of us probably won’t be pipped. The middle range is all about the same.

Best option is to ask your manager to let you add comments on your official form. There is a space for employee feedback/input that manager should utilize. Send the request in writing. Your label will not category will not change but at least you can leave some bread crumbs for the following cycle and your next manager.

Play this scenario out and see where things will go…. Assuming no net new employees are added to pool given attrition and new hires offsetting.

100 people x 92% survival = 92
92x92% = 85
85x9% = 78
78x92% = 72
And so on. Pretty quickly NI of today are gone and the good become NI and the Very good become good.

I was once told that I was the top performer in my group but other people had to be placed above me for political reasons.

No recourse in which you win/improve. Going to HR is very bad idea.

The ranking system will be protected because all the people in power succeeded in that system and believe that EM is better for having such a great and fair system.

If you don’t feel it to be fair, there’s minimal recourse. Time to assess your options including staying and working for better results next year. However, the chances are minimal that things will change. It’s not personal, just a mixture of too many good people and not enough roles. Sorry for the shock, it’ll dull with time.

I was told by a senior manager that my ranking was completely political and not related to my work.

I went to HR and complained because I had been told “Open Door Policy”

My Supervisor was then instructed to tell me to withdraw the complaint and do damage control to salvage my career.

I would not trust HR or go to HR. HR will do whatever required to protect the ranking system even though it is fatally flawed.

You could schedule a meeting with your HR person, but sincerely doubt it would help.

Are you new to the company?
