Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Is it safe to join?

I got an offer but I worry about all the layoffs happening in tech right now.
Looking for an honest opinion.

Let’s try a definition: safe - continually developing useful skills so you can always land a new job if needed.

If your job role is software development expect to be doing ten line bug fixes for a good part of your “career.” The ones with the PhDs are smart enough to quit after a few months of this. The rest like frogs in a pot are boiled to death and become unemployable. Cisco more-so than many other companies is not safe by this definition.

Take it. Per HR policy you will be guaranteed 1yr to stay. Post that it is god’s grace .. no career advancement and constant fear of when your turn will come..

If it is in RTP then forget about moving up in the career too as it is filled with people born in 60s who don’t have any aspirations to go up and block you from going up as the manager is a buddy of them working together since they started..

Cisco is focused on outsourcing jobs to countries without labor laws... or quietly converting full-time employees to contractors without benefits

Does that sound like a fun work environment?

The vocal majority just tells it like it is.

It takes a couple years before you figure out how messed up Cisco is... it's painted a lot of lipstick on the pig. But you'll join the ranks of people who know better soon enough.

Depends on the team. I love it here. This website is full of the vocal minority who complain about everything.

Cisco can't be that bad. Look at the guy who quit 19 years ago. I reckon he was let go but let's pretend he quit. Look at what we have here: 19 years later the guy is still resentful!

There are no guarantees in life or work, here, there or anywhere. Employment is 'at will'.

I left a great job with another technology company to come here. I wouldn't do it again now that I have seen with my own eyes that this place is extremely unstable. If you are in a good job - Do not come to Cisco right now. Layoffs are a real thing and there has been zero budget over past two years. I'm talking - AM's can't even take their customers to lunch. It's scrutinized. Also - the company is going beyond woke. It will be shoved down your throat constantly.

If you can handle the working environment of all managers managing up along with fear being used as the main motivator, Cisco is the right place.

Cisco as a company is never safe for anyone's mental health.

They treat their employees like slaves, they do not allow any opinions to exist but those of the C-level. Fed down to the employees by decree. They do not value their employees - layoffs are regular occurrences with them happening at least yearly, but more often stealth layoffs happen every 6 months.

The company is dying and no one wants to put any real work into fixing it, so everyone is just riding the ship down. That leaves people trying to protect their small positions and trying to keep their job relevant. Lots of in-fighting.

There is very little real work to do. There are pre-meetings to the pre-meetings to the meetings, and nothing is getting said at any of them. Most people are looking for a way out of this company, not into it.

If you want a job where you will be stressed to the nines about losing your job every 6 months, where there is no stability or growth, where the employees are treated like dirt... if you are really that desperate, maybe go for it. But if you have ANY other options, please, don't torture yourself here.

Listen very carefully to the next earnings call, then decide.

Poster commenting about RTP or Texas obviously knows nothing at all of either... Most likely some disgruntled bay area liberal who can't comprehend why people and jobs are leaving.

It’s safe to join- especially in the Texas or RTp where all the flabby early in carrer and middle-aged pre-diabetic barbecue guzzling workers enjoy ED medications to power them before they hit the rub and rug outlets on their way back from work. Attrition due to bad health makes easy rise into management.

Said it yourself, layoffs are everywhere in tech. If the offer is what you’re looking for and need, take it.

To survive all the layoffs at Cisco, the hiring manager would need to be a rat. It's a gamble accepting a job at Cisco.

It depends on what position and business unit. Cisco fiscal year ends in a week, and it's a safe bet there will be some cuts announced in August. Before accepting ask for an honest conversation with hiring manager about the health of the business unit.
