Technical Path Rankings

Seems like most 5+ year experience technical path folks are topping out in the Good category. Anyone on the technical path make it higher?

Second year NRE here and I received a bump up in ranking, to my surprise. I agree with @3yjq that maybe some managers scored points from my work. Additionally, I think they are simply running out of some skill sets.

Yes I have been last year VG and this year up to E despite being in NRE status and explicitly telling Supervisor and Manager for the last two years…”for the love of all that is fair and right…put me at the bottom and put ‘Alice’ and ‘Bob’ at higher category…because 1) they both work much harder and contribute more than me, and 2) there is no consequence of going low to me on flat end of the salary curve at my YEE and NRE.

I have only one explanation for why they do not put me NSI, and that is because they have to OVERSELL my contribution because they are employing a narrative that THEY are expertly extracting amazing results out of me through THEIR management skills.

Half the battle in getting to the top of your rank group is receiving the assignment that provides the opportunity.

This is why EM will NEVER do job postings.

EM Management want to have absolute control over who is considered and who gets approved for key opportunity positions.

EM Management cannot cope with a system in which the best qualified (unsponsored) obtain the good positions.

Yes.

Why can't you compete? Not producing as much or not as likeable? Both can be improved but only if you take a break from blaming others and focus on what is in control - yourself.

I worked under a Department Manager that seemed to resent me for knowing more about his area of expertise than he did. He dropped me as far down the ranking as possible in an effort to get rid of me.

Another department manager that had witnessed this, had me transferred and told me that my career could not survive another year under that jealous freak.

A few years later, I ended up having to work for the freak again. That @55hole dropped me in ranking as far as possible such that I was at bottom when I escaped to another department.

Very difficult to recover from the impact of that jealous freak who hated me just because I knew more and accomplished more that he ever will.

Be very careful when dealing with managers that have the false belief that they know something about your specialty. Never laugh when they say very stupid things unknowingly.. Never correct them in front of Senior Management.

I’ve been outstanding several years in a row and I’m technical, and I don’t have any sponsors. Just work your ba||s off and create business value and it’ll work out. You also have to do the extra boondoggle presentations and extracurriculars. If you don’t do that last part, you’ll never be O.

I’m technical and report through manufacturing. I’ve been outstanding with distinction more than once. So it can happen. I’m fortunate there’s no hi pos anywhere near my rank group I guess.

@tei+1hPDvm93 Absolutely correct dude. In tier 2 and above (CL28 and up) the HiPos are always outstanding with distinction or outstanding. They are sponsored so they are always at the top. And, if the ranking session makes "a mistake" and ranks one of these individuals as G, HR will most definitely make sure that mistake is "corrected" immediately. High flying planners and managers come next somewhere in the excellent group, perhaps some unlucky person falls into the VG. All, absolutely all technical people come next VG, G, NI, NSI. This is how it is. You'd better accept it or leave the company. Nothing you can do about this. I have accepted it because my paycheck is huge. So, even if I am G, my paycheck is ranked higher than that somewhere in the E to OwD groups. One paycheck at a time baby, one paycheck at a time.

When the technical path was first being promoted heavily, it was explained that the technical individuals would be valued as much as the management path people, and respected the same amount.

Then they kept ranking both in same groups and a person managing 15 people was always ranked higher than all the technical people, even though each and every technical person probably had greater impact. One justification was that the management ladder individuals needed higher ranking so they could compete better for their next manager job, while the technical ladder people were just going to stay in same job.

This was magnified when they moved technical people into CL 28 and ranked us against higher up managers. Basically the technical folks fill the bottom of the CL28 ranking while Managers got all top RG buckets.

In summary, technical contributors always lose to sponsored managers in ranking.

This post is BS and not true. I personally know a good chunk of individual contributors that are ranked VG or above. One thing to raise legitimate issues, another thing to propagate lies!

This observation aligns with the Company strategy/trend of eliminating/reducing the number of technical folks and sending the jobs elsewhere and relying more on Contractors/consultants. As we become flush with cash and fat, d-mb and happy again, we'll push the pendulum back toward in house technical competency.

Yeah. The old Technical path is not what it used to be.
The science, engineering, maths side of things is underappreciated.
Hard to be Excellent in areas the company has given up on.
