Thread regarding Ford layoffs

The best advice

You can't control whether they will keep you or not.
Pity parties should only last for an hour or two.
Fretting for days, weeks etc doesn't accomplish anything productive.
Assume you will be let go and take action NOW.

It really is as simple as this. After the first shock, everybody should be looking to find ways to help themselves the best they can. @zlz+1hPZWqPV is 100% right.

One thing the old-timers in the group have explained around training your replacements is to only document and train on the obvious. Do not bother documenting the critical bits and logic behind processes. Neither the replacements, friends and family contingent, nor the leaders have sufficient knowledge to know any better or appreciate anything beyond the obvious. In the end Ford will blame the exiting staff for everything that goes wrong and go on another hiring spree. So don’t waste your efforts.

I saw this first hand with the SRD. They SRD the two tech spec in our area. One just packed up that day and turned in his laptop. The other diligently tried to turn over all the in-progress and past work to unwilling recipient GSR8s and LL6. Both were vilified as having hidden info from GSRs and LL6 and supposedly not documented anything.

@1pbw India is reaching played out status. Brasil, Mexico and China better bets.
IBM and Kyndryl have been shifting out of India to these locales. Cheaper and more reliable+stable labor with better work ethic. Also the bribery game isn’t as prevalent with officials in those locales. Ford experiences continual staff turnover in India and demands from staff for yearly promotions. The staff in Brasil is stable and hard working, same for Mexico. The menial tasks will remain in India.

1nsl+1hQ8Ucjc,

The top of the food chain is outside of the U.S. This has NOTHING to do with EV vs ICE.
With everyone "working" from home, it has been proven outsourcing can be done with a flip of a switch. 8000 cuts is just the start, the vast majority of jobs (EV) will be in lower cost countries. The only option is retirement.
If you're young, go back to school and into something else.

A lot of people complain about winter, well India is nice and warm year round.

Ford’s business model is NOT sustainable. It is all predicated on

  • convincing governments (federal, state and municipal) to hand out money to “save” American jobs. Have you watched how Biden and others were manipulated to trash talk Tesla, the talking points were eerily the same as Ford PR blurbs.
  • US consumers buying high-priced Ford vehicles with declining quality.

Farley has underestimated the intelligence of the US consumer and underestimated the US voters willingness to go along with the madness.

Best advice I can offer is to scan jobsonline and immediately apply to any Model e positions you are qualified for in mobility and digital spaces. Model e needs people, has tremendous leadership and vision, plus when the end game of the Ford transformation happens, Model e will be the top of the food chain.

It is not recommended to remain in ICE or anything hardware/mechanical. Those are dead ends within Ford as of right now.

laid off early in my engineering career from an energy company in 80s oil bust. It was a huge layoff. I was caught off guard and had the stuffing knocked out of me. I had to relocate out of TX to find my next engineering job, this time aerospace. Older and wiser, when I saw the warning signs of company collapse I jumped ship to automotive. Now retirement.

Layoffs happen, the first one stings.
Learn from it and keep your engineering skills portable.
Learn from it and learn to be financially independent - having no debt gives you options.

Learn to pay attention to the warning signs.

When I was at GM, I was blindsided by the layoffs in 2019. I was a Level 8 Technical Lead (i.e.: like and LL6 at Ford) in an "in demand" area and naively thought that I would be safe. Honestly the emotional pain of being laid off is similar to losing someone or a pet. I won't sugar coat it, it's really a hard thing to go through. So having now lived through a layoff, my advice is to prepare yourself for the possibility that you could be on the list. It's nearly impossible to do but try to stay positive. After all, you will be off the sinking ship. If you aren't ready to retire, get your resume' and LinkedIn profile together. Start thinking about what you could do as an alternative for your work. If you are able to retire, start making your plans so that if "packages" are offered, you can consider accepting one. I sincerely hope that these layoffs won't happen but if they do I hope everyone lands on their feet. This just shouldn't be happening.

You are absolutely right. At least with the news leak you have a warning and can start getting things in order. Even if this isn't a situation where YOU get cut, it should serve as a wake up call. Don't be complacent and assume you're safe. Now is the time to prepare. I'm stressed about the situation but I've taken actions to prepare. I imagine this will happen in phases so you will probably have a bit of time but don't sit around and wait for something to happen

For that you will have to do the leg work. You have to call experienced offices and ask what experience they have. And then select.

If I may make one recommendation: don't go cheap on your expert I'd say.
