How long after NSI ranking do you have to decide to work thru a PIP versus take the PIL

Well, when I was presented with the option, they told me that they would not create a PIP until I agreed not to take the PIL.
Needless to say, I took the PIL, enjoyed a three month paid vacation as well as a getting paid for the six weeks of vacation that I had accumulated.
Wait until the last day to sign up for the PIL.
Doesn't seem like worth the stress. Even if you pass, it's very hard to recover.
Yet my incoming manager today told me how hard the PIP is today for 90 days.
Take the PIP You'll pass. All this cr@p is almost behind us
7 days if under 40. 21 if over.
