“Guided” ranking effects on team

I’m on a small team that’s long had a stable headcount of high-performers and strong culture of collaboration. Our strength has always been in our mutual trust and cooperation. I cannot overstate the damage that has been done to the fabric of the team by the pressure on our manager to institute a quota. It’s like a sudden chill has descended on us, leaving us guarded around each other, less likely to confide in each other, and discouraged from lending a helping hand. The only openness left is in the sharing of notes on our job searches. Forced/guided ranking was a fad in past decades at other companies like Microsoft, and has been thoroughly debunked in business circles and seen widespread abandonment. It’s the last thing a company wracked by dysfunction and low morale needs.
