Thread regarding Sam's Club layoffs

Someone physically unable to do their job.

We have a long term associate in our meat department who can no longer physically do the bare minimum requirement of their job description. He always leaves early on the busy days, management protects this guy. How long should we put up with it before quitting?

This person sounds like me. I am a lazy worker...I come in late, leave early and take long lunches. Often times I'm in the bathroom. I took up smoking so I can justify 6 smoke breaks a day now.

I often start a task and drag my feet so bad... someone else has to end up finishing it.

Life is goooooood....

If you look around, there are things he can probably do to help such a stud workhorse like yourself. Ask him to do things like run your boxes to the baler.
Little things add up to time consumption. Let him do the little things.

I am a long time associate. For a long time I was unable to walk without assistance. ie leaning on a cart or walking with canes. My management was very gracious during many months of me being in this condition. I was eventually able to have both my knees replaced. Now I walk and move as well as I did 15 years ago. I am much more productive now. My managers and coworkers were patient and I am very grateful for that. It is my hope you will have some patience with this associate you are speaking of.

There are no “light duty” positions unless you are injured on the job. If there are requisitions open that would be better suited for him, he can apply for that position.

Just quit. If they really can’t do the job, there will be nobody left to do the job.

Talk to your managers about the issue, there are light duty positions for people like this. They can move them to any other job within the club if they feel like they are not able to do their job. Not a difficult situation really.

If they can’t do the job and management is actively protecting them, call osha. Your club will be fined a large amount per day that they’ve known about the issue and haven’t resolved it. Happened at our club a few years ago in a situation that sounds very similar. We had a meat cutter who smoked a lot and had Reynauds syndrome, very little feeling in the fingertips. Osha said he could not legally operate a bandsaw anymore and fined us an ungodly amount. Our GM was terminated for neglecting to address the issue.
