Thread regarding Honeywell International Inc. layoffs

Maybe I didn’t negotiate well

I need a vacation, but obviously there is never the "right time" to request it. I have been trying to choose the best time to take my vacation for a very long time. In the meantime, I’m getting more and more exhausted, more and more nervous, and I’d most rather give notice because it’s terribly hard to go on vacation. At least in my case it's like that. Anyone else?

I just send out a recurring meeting notice showing I will be outcof office on vacation. Many I work with do not same. My boss does the same. Have never asked for approval in my 20+ years here.

@1nrb I agree about furloughs. One of the first furlough rounds a few years ago, I told my manager "this is great, I'll take a week unpaid every month" He didn't go for it. I keep reminding him that the offer stands.

Good thread. The frequency of deadlines and work load is more than expected on purpose. I don't request vacation either. It's a notice of when I won't be available. The company motto is to overload you. This way, even if you slip, you take the hit and company still got max work out of you. "Balance" is not a term here. Look how far they took the overdrive effort?

The Honeywell "unlimited Vacation" is a joke and a complete money grab by the company. Take your vacay. Ur manager's job is to make sure the work gets done while you're out. Don't let them make you feel like owe them. You work, you get paid. Every other Friday you and HW are even.... almost anyway. It must have been quite a hoot to hear the HR Pres (Karen) tell the DA about this scam and take credit for it.

That's precisely why HW went to an "unlimited" vacation policy. Just another money saving scam to rob employees of another benefit.

How is your planned vacation time any less sacred than paid maternity and paternity leave? It's part of your compensation, and you've (presumably) earned it. Sure, be considerate of your projects and your colleagues, but the concept of "vacation" is to get away from the work environment and recharge the mental and emotional batteries. Give your "people manager" ample notice and then take the time off!

Just a side note, I'm a dinosaur that comes from an era when maternity/paternity leave was granted in days, not weeks. In the span of 40+ years I never took more than a week of vacation at a time, and in hindsight I realize what a foolish choice that was. Don't be like me!

I feel ya, OP. Deadline after deadline. Everything's urgent. No foreseeable lull in the action to take a reasoned vacation, management refuses to approve more than 2-3 consecutive days off, while I have to cover for my European colleagues, who take 3-week vacays and 6 weeks of sick leave when they skin their knee.

As a result I welcome furloughs, which speaks to what a twisted, debased culture HW has.

My request for vacation is for informational purposes only. I'm not asking permission, I'm letting them know I won't be here on whatever days I'll be on vacation.

If they can't handle things without you, that sounds like a management and staffing problem. Not YOUR problem.
