Thread regarding VMware layoffs

I was laid off two years ago

I've only been at my old company for a little over a year, so the "severance" was laughable. It wasn't easy, but three months later I joined VMware and I have just started relaxing once again when the Broadcom news hit. I have no idea how I'm going to take another layoff since the first time already messed me up mentally. Talk about bad luck.

Way back when I worked at Honeywell, we had the best year every. Starting in January the next year we had layoffs which continued for over 2 years. I watched 1/2 the division get let go. I was working with a guy that did board layouts and I asked him if he was nervous about the layoffs. What he said stuck with me. He said “the worst thing that happens when you get let go is you find a better job making more money”. If you do get let go, focus on finding a better job. If you have cycles, learn some new skills that have value at companies to prep for needing to do a pivot. Companies don't take care of you. Only you are responsible for your career so take charge of it.

I'm personally done with this industry. I'd rather use my talents to impact society in another way. Life is too short. Do what makes you happy and use your talents. Good luck out there.

Sorry for the anxiety this is causing you. Not sure if this helps but I've been through this way too many times. It is the nature of this industry where either the next round oof funding fails, the company does poorly and has to lay off people or some other company comes and buys the company. Try to make the best of it and use this time to look for another job. Good luck.

Use the time from now until the close of the acquisition to aggressively job hunt. If you find something great, don't be afraid to make the jump right away. Try to focus on what you can personally control - you'll get both a better outcome and a better perspective.

Good luck, friend.
